Study Tour to the Upper Midwest of the United States, 15 September – 2 October, 2009
organized by the American Studies Institutes of the University of Leipzig, Germany and of the Jagiellonian University, Kraków, Poland

Tentative Schedule


Tuesday, September 15
Departure from Leipzig: 9:15 am, from Kraków: 6:15 am, arrival Chicago O’Hare: 5:01 and 5:15 pm; students from Kraków and Leipzig meet at the airport after formalities with Homeland Security. Transfer to Chinatown Hotel.

Wednesday, September 16
Session at the History Department, University of Chicago; discussion with Professor Kathleen Neils Conzen on historical immigration patterns to the rural and urban centers in the Midwest; talk by Professor Michael Conzen on the effects of changing patterns of mass immigration on Chicago’s metropolitan geography

Thursday, September 17
9:30-11 am: Professor Lewis Erenberg, Loyola University: “American popular entertainment, popular music, and sports as a meeting ground for diverse peoples,” Room 528 of Crown Center on the Loyola University Lake Shore Campus
1-2:45 pm: Visit to a neighborhood elementary school on Chicago’s Northwest Side organized by Professor Susan Hirsch, Loyola University; discussion with teachers and students, Swift Specialty School, 5900 N .Winthrop
